Major Fuel Brands & Networks

Large fuel companies and card networks. Scores here reflect end-user experience at forecourts and via their direct card products. These providers operate at significant scale — end-user satisfaction scores are typically lower than specialist brokers.

Note on scoring major brands: Shell, Esso, DKV, Texaco and Keyfuels are fuel brands and networks rather than dedicated card management services. Their end-user review scores are inherently lower because customers interact with thousands of independently operated forecourts, and complaints are spread across network quality, pricing, and service. Scores should be read in that context — they are not directly comparable to specialist brokers above.

Sources: Scores are editorial estimates derived from Google Maps reviews, Reddit (r/UKBusiness, haulage communities), PistonHeads, TruckNetUK, and publicly available forums as of April 2026. They are not official ratings from any platform. Supermarket entries (Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury's) reflect general forecourt experience — none offer a standalone business fuel card independently.

Buyer's Checklist

Five things to verify before signing up to any fuel card — regardless of provider.

1
Read the contract and verify all card charges
Before signing, ask for a full written schedule of fees. Specifically confirm the cost of issuing a new card, the charge for replacing a lost or damaged card, and any cancellation or early termination fees. These charges vary significantly between providers and are not always disclosed upfront during the sales call.
New card charges Replacement card fees Cancellation charges
2
Understand exactly how weekly pricing works
Ask the provider how and when the weekly price is set, how it relates to pump price, and what happens if market prices fall — does your card price follow? Confirm whether prices are fixed for the week or can change mid-week. Some providers offer genuinely fixed weekly prices; others use pricing models that can drift well above pump without notice.

3
Check the account cancellation terms
Confirm the exact process for cancelling your account — in writing, not just verbally. Some providers require 30–90 days written notice, charge exit fees, or make cancellation deliberately difficult. Reviews for several providers in this list specifically cite account closure as a major pain point. Know your exit route before you enter.
Notice period required Written cancellation process Exit or termination fees
4
Research reviews across multiple platforms
Do not rely on a single source. Check Google Maps, Reddit (particularly r/UKBusiness and haulage communities), PistonHeads forums, and Trustpilot. Look specifically for reviews from customers who have been with the provider for 6 months or more — early reviews often reflect onboarding satisfaction, while long-term reviews reveal the true pricing and service picture.

5
Clarify all additional billing charges
Ask specifically about direct debit bounce charges (some providers charge £50–£80 per failed payment regardless of the reason), paper invoice fees (some charge monthly for a printed statement), and customer support charges (a small number of providers charge for phone support calls). These costs are rarely mentioned at sign-up but appear on invoices later.
